Narrator Mary Angel Gabriel Joseph Elizabeth Zachariah Shepherds (3 or 4) Wise Men (3) SCENE I ELIZABETH AND THE ANGEL Narrator (Maria): When Herod the Great was king of the land called Judea, there was an old man named Zechariah. His wife was Elizabeth. They had no children. Zechariah and Elizabeth were good people and tried hard to obey the laws of the lord. One day, Zechariah was in the Lord’s Temple when suddenly an angel from the Lord came down to him. Ange Gabriel (Charles): Do not be afraid. I am Gabriel. God’s servant and I was sent to tell you good news. Your wife Elizabeth is going to have a son! You will call him John. He will be a great servant to God. Zechariah (Danilo): But my wife and I are both very old. How will this happen?” Angel Gabriel (Charles): You do not believe, so you will not be able to speak until child is born. Narrator (Maria): When Zechariah left the Temple, he could not speak. When he wanted to say something, he had to write in down. Soon, Elizabeth discovered that she was expecting a baby, just as the angel had promised. She was so happy. SCENE 2 MARY AND THE ANGEL Narrator (Maria): Then the angel Gabriel appeared to a young woman named Mary. Gabriel had a message for her too. Angel Gabriel (Charles): Greetings, Mary! The Lord is with you. [Mary looks frightened.] Angel Gabriel (Charles): Do not be afraid. I am Gabriel, God’s servant. God has a surprise for you: You will give birth to a son and call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Highest. Narrator(Maria):Mary was humble and always praying and serving God. Mary (Sofia): But how? I'm not married. Angel (Charles): The Holy Spirit will come down to you, and God’s power will come over you. Mary (Sofia): [bowing before the angel] I am the Lord's servant, ready to serve. Narrator (Maria): Joseph was very troubled by my news. But God knew his fears and quietly took care of things. SCENE 3 JOSEPH AND GABRIEL [Gabriel appears to Joseph, who is lying on a bench or on a rug on the risers, asleep.] Angel (Charles): Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to marry Mary. Mary's baby is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus. He will save his people from their sins. [Joseph woke up and planned to marry Mary as the Angel told him.] SCENE 4 ELIZABETH AND JOHN Narrator(Maria): For many months, Zechariah could not speak. Then Elizabeth’s baby was born. Elizabeth (Zolia): His name is John. He will help people who do not obey God to change their ways. John will prepare people for the Lord. SCENE 5 MARY AND JOSEPH ON THE ROAD TO BETHLEHEM Narrator (Maria): It was almost time for Mary’s baby to be born. But he would not be born in Nazareth. The Roman emperor Caesar Augustus wanted all the people to pay taxes to Rome, but first everyone had to go to their hometown to be counted. Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem. It was a long journey. When they finally arrived, there was no place for them to stay. Finally, a kind innkeeper (motel) let them stay in his barn. [Mary and Joseph walk to Bethlehem] SCENE 6 MARY AND JOSEPH WITH BABY JESUS IN THE STABLE Narrator (Maria): Mary gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Joseph named the baby Jesus, just as the angel had said. SCENE 7 SHEPHERDS AND THE ANGELS [Four or five shepherds are gathered around a "fire" to keep warm when the angel appears to them.] Narrator (Maria): There were shepherds that night watching over their sheep. Suddenly, God's angel came to them. They were very frightened. Angel (Charles): Don't be afraid. I have good news! Today in the city of David, a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord. You will find him lying on a bed of hay. Shepherds: Let's go to Bethlehem and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us. Narrator (Maria): They left, and found Mary and Joseph, and saw the baby lying in the manger. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. SCENE 6 THREE WISE MEN FROM THE EAST Narrator (Maria): After Jesus was born, some wise men came to worship Jesus. The saw a new star in the east. That meant a new leader has come into the world. The star led them to the place where the child was. They entered the house and saw the child in the arms of Mary, his mother. Overcome, they kneeled and worshiped him. Then they opened their bags and presented gifts: gold, frankincense, myrrh. [Three wise men take out objects and present them to Jesus.] |
