Hispanic Heritage Month 2013
On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus arrived and began Spain’s brutal conquest and colonization of Central and South America. October 12 is celebrated in the U.S. as the Columbus Day. The day is also celebrated in Latin America in various ways: Discovery Day in the Bahamas; Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain; Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural (Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity) in Argentina; Day of the Americas in Belize; and Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay.
National Hispanic Heritage Month began in1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to cover a 30-day period from September 15 to October 15. It became a law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. |
