The purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarships to Latino deaf students with financial needs. John Ramirez Lopez's life's work was dedicated to social justice and he worked with various Washington, D.C. groups and at the Policy Office during President Clinton's Administration to improve the quality of life for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Latino communities. John was also a role model to many young Deaf student leaders. He volunteered his time as a workshop presenter and speaker for the Junior National
Association for the Deaf (Jr NAD) at national conferences, and the NAD Youth Leadership Camp in Pengilly, Minnesota. John also was actively involved as the first Chairperson of the National Hispanic. He was also a member of the 1973 National Leadership Training Program at CSUN. Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (now called National Council of Hispano Deaf and Hard of Hearing when the organization was formed in 1992 in San Antonio. A great man and vision of leadership
The Deaf Latino Community and LDHHAMDC founders have paid tribute to John Lopez, a great man and visionary leader. He helped improve to the lives of deaf people by working to improve access to 911 emergency services. Also, He played a role model to Deaf Latinos and Deaf student leaders. |

The statement is inspiring, which says: "Lopez passed away in 2008, but his spirit lives on through the John Lopez '65 Scholarship Fund, founded in 2009 by Franklin Torres, Elvia Guillermo, and Leticia Arellano to help Deaf Latino students finance their education at Gallaudet." LDHHAMDC was pleased John Lopez was chosen to be honored his visionary leader as Gallaudet University celebrated its anniversary entitled, Celebrating 150 Years of Visionary Leadership, from September 2013 to November 2014.
