In other words, they are often deprived of the following key resources: Food Water Shelter First Aid ... and Communication Access The natural disasters that have struck Puerto Rico and Mexico are powerful and we must come together to show "Deaf Strength" - FUERZA SORDA - as a community response!!! In honor, appreciation, and celebration of Deaf culture and Latino culture we are displaying a night of food and sign language poetry with esteemed deaf entertainers and community leaders. 100% of the tickets proceeds and donations raised before and during the event will go towards Deaf/Hard of Hearing resilience and recovery in Puerto Rico and Mexico. Organizer of ASL Poetry Night to Support Disaster Recovery for the Deaf/HH Latino Deaf and Hard of Hearing Association of the Metropolitan DC Area, Inc Latino Deaf and Hard of Hearing Association of the Metropolitan DC Area, Inc (LDHHAMDC) proudly serve Deaf and Hard of Hearing Latino Members since 2005 Latino Deaf and Hard of Hearing Association of the Metropolitan DC Area, Inc (LDHHAMDC) is the diverse organization for thousands of Latin Deaf and Hard of Hearing Americans. For the ten years, LDHHAMDC is at the forefront of advocacy efforts for equal access to education, employment and social services on behalf of Latin Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the US. Founded in 2005, LDHHAMDC is a successive organization with more than 110 members in the DC area. LDHHAMDC is a non-profit organization composed of parents, educators, students, Spanish language speaking people who want to work together to make a difference. LDHHAMDC is affiliated with National Council of Hispano Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Membership include Latino Deaf hard of hearing, parent of Latino Deaf hard of hearing children; professionals who work with Latino Deaf hard of hearing youth and adults; international students; and Latino Deaf hard of hearing immigrants, and people of color and other interested individuals. http://www.ldhhamdc.org/ Leah Katz-Hernandez Leah Katz-Hernandez is a speaker, author, and advisor with the Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation Advisory Committee. Previously known as the celebrated Receptionist Of The United States for President Obama “ROTUS,” Ms. Katz-Hernandez is a leading expert on disability inclusion, public communication strategy, and civil rights. Through her dynamic career, she gained experience with the nonprofit sector, presidential campaigns, Capitol Hill, and the Obama White House. As a highly visible White House employee, Ms. Katz-Hernandez skillfully welcomed world leaders to the West Wing while simultaneously urging equal access for the Deaf, Disability, and Latina communities. Ms. Katz-Hernandez now uses her expertise to advocate for equality all over the world, with a focus on supporting marginalized communities. She earned her MA in Strategic Communication from American University in 2016 and a BA in Government from Gallaudet University in 2010. www.leahkh.com Proceeds will benefit International Deaf Emergency and Off-The-Grid Missions, Inc. Both are vetted nonprofits working directly with the deaf community in affected areas. International Deaf Emergency International Deaf Emergency, Inc., (IDE) ,is a non-profit organization in the United States of America (USA) as well as an International Disabled Peoples’ Organization (DPO) being run by Deaf persons in majority and is recognized as an International Member of the World Deaf Federation (WFD) that has direct consultative status with the United Nations (UN). IDE’s mission is to bridge the language, communication and relationship gaps between persons who are or with difficulty in hearing and to offer emergency services in areas not limited (i) pre- disaster prepardness and mitigation, (ii) rescue and relief in the context of disaster and (iii) post disaster rehabilitation, reconstruction and recovery. http://www.ideafe.org/ Off-The-Grid Missions, Inc. Off-The-Grid Missions, Inc, is a NON-Profit 501(c)(3) whose mission is to bring sustainable resources and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense to communities around the world. This fundraiser is intended for specific sustainable supplies to be brought by hand directly to the Deaf/HOH in Puerto Rico. Each item has a specific purpose. Once funded, the supplies will be shipped to Brooklyn, New York where they will be packaged and personally flown over to the island. Once there, they will be taken to various points in the most devastated areas.
