President's Letter
As of October 5, 2008
Queridos miembros,
This morning I woke up and got ready for work. There was an open window and I felt a bit funny because of the cold breeze. I realize it is already fall, no more summer. As a matter of fact, my summer was great. I would share some of the activities which took place during summer related to our organization. On the weekend of May 8-10, the Board of Trustees from National Council Hispano Deaf and Hard of Hearing including Elvia Guillermo and me were in Washington, DC. We discussed deeply new strategies for our national organization. Critically, we continue to work and collaborate on our tasks for the best future. Also, we discussed and focused on the national conference in Chicago, 2010. You can keep checking and visiting their website, follow click here We also went to the pavilion behind Clerk Center (KDES) for a social gathering. Our LDHHAMDC members were volunteers to cook our famous fajitas and other Latino dishes. The purpose of the cookout was for fundraising for our young Latino members to go to the Youth Deaf USA camp in New Orleans, Louisiana at the end of the month of June. Indeed, we sent three Latino youth members: Bregitt Jimenez, Hector Reynoso, and Joel Garcia to the camp. Apparently, they were excited to share with us what they learned and met many potential young leaders. In addition, our LDHH member, Bregitt Jimenez was elected for the Director of the Youth Camp for 2010. We must applaud (wave hands) her. We are looking forward to her being successful.
Our organization will always remember Mr. John Lopez, who passed away on August 20. Please go and read John’s story below. I plan to establish a leadership scholarship fund to honor his memory and name. We will discuss more details during the few next general meetings. Keep eye on our updated announcements.
One of our LDHH members, Delia Lozano-Martinez, who gave an “Immigration” workshop at the meeting in June, shared many issues and concerns in our community. Most of us know there are always a lot of questions about the laws in this country.
Former LDHH member, Mayra Castro invited a group of people from Philadelphia and some LDHH members to her home in Philadelphia, PA. The only members that attended were Sibila Munoz, Franklin E. Torres and me. I was inspired that the small group had established a Hispanic Deaf Club in 1990, but the organization dissolved for some reasons. However, they really want it back since they saw our organization and also how our organization hosted the National Conference “SER” in 2007. The group asked me to share information about leadership, organizational structures, recruitment of members and other things. The discussions were good and productive and they have very positive attitudes to re-establish their organization. Hopefully, our organization can set up a good relationship for their potential organization again.
As President, I am proudly announcing our newly elected officers for 2008-2010. They elected me as a president during the general meeting which was on September 20th. However, we have new faces on the Executive Board. They are Vice-president Wally Barretto, Treasurer Norma Moran and two members at large, Rita Torres and Leticia Arellano. I will seek a new secretary for this organization. If you are interested in taking this position, please contact me ASAP. We also are looking for new member for committees; please feel free to ask me. We can meet your needs.
We will have a special banquet on November 22nd from 5 to 8pm. We would like to welcome you to join and support us. We will honor some of the members who have worked hard for our organization. They will receive an award. If you are curious who will receive an award, please come to the banquet. More information will be announced soon. Please share and spread the word to your beloved friends/families. Tickets will be sold.
Finally, LDHHAMDC will host the 2nd Annual Deaf Indoor Soccer Amistad Tournament on November 28 and 29. We welcome both men’s and women’s team to compete. For more information, please click here . Please spread the word to your friends to come and support us.
I ask that you to pay your renewal membership if your membership has expired or will expire soon. You are important to our organization. Please click here , fill out the form and return the form to the organization’s P.O. I will keep you posted on more upcoming events.
